TEZPUR: Tezpur Cancer Centre (TCC) - a unit of Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) under Government of Assam and the TATA Trusts, was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on April 28, 2022. In the last one year, TCC completed 4675 radiotherapy sessions to 217 patients, 2518 chemotherapy, and did many CT/MRI scans/mammography. Recently, TCC has started world class Brachytherapy services on June 8, which is another major milestone in cancer care. This 1st Brachytherapy was successfully done by Dr. Sanjeev K. Gupta (Senior Consultant & Head, Dept. of Radiation Oncology), Dr. Suhas V Navada (Associate Consultant) and team. It was well appreciated by Medical Superintendent Dr. Sanjib Hazarika, Senior Medical Oncologist Dr. Venkata Pradeep, Dr. Banerjee, and Devajeet Kalita.

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy where a radioactive source is inserted near tumours to eliminate and shrink tumours. About 80% of brachytherapy sessions contribute to cervical cancer (which is cancer of the lowest part of the uterus), and the remaining to uterus, vagina, esophagus, head and neck, breast cancers, etc. According to a report by BioMed Central, Breast and Cervical Cancers are extremely common among women and India amounts to 27% of the global cervical cancer cases (about 1.3 Lakh cases per year). In India, the practice of brachytherapy is still not widespread, except at a few elite and private institutions. Hopefully, this Brachytherapy facility at TCC will be beneficial to the cancer patients of Sonitpur and nearby districts like Biswanath, Nagaon, Udalguri, and some parts of Arunachal Pradesh.
