TEZPUR: As Sonitpur district battles a surge in COVID cases, 30 inmates of the Tezpur Central Jail have tested positive for the infection, said officials.
Speaking to media persons, Jailer of Tezpur Central Jail, Raju Kumar Choudhury said, " The prison currently has 399 inmates. Over the past two days, 30 inmates tested positive for COVID-19. They are asymptomatic. The inmates who have tested positive have been kept in isolation in the premises. Also, doctors and ambulances have been deployed in the vicinity, informed Choudhury.
Mentionably, Sonitpur is one of worst affected the districts in the second wave of COVID in Assam. On Friday, the district logged 167 new cases and one casualty owing to the infection over the past 24 hours taking the toll tally to 196 in the district during the second wave of the pandemic. The district administration has enforced strict restrictions to stem the surge in cases.
