GUWAHATI: Former Tezpur MP from BJP Ram Prasad Sarmah has joined the Congress on February 24. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal welcomed him to the party. In Delhi, he was accompanied by former CM of Assam Tarun Gogoi.
Last year in March, Sarmah has given his resignation from the party after State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name was forwarded to the central leadership to contest the election from Tezpur Constituency.
Ram Prasad Sarmah in his Facebook post had said, “I have left BJP today. But I really feel pained in my heart for those old BJP workers of Assam who were most neglected in the Party by the new intruders in the Party. I was strongly raising my voice on their behalf. Now there will be none to raise voice for them. Its old guards of the Party who tioling for decades brought BJP to power without any other support. But now they are most neglected and ill-treated. Love you, my dear friends. I will be still with you. Thank you for your help and support and support and love for me.”
As per Sources, Sarmah was pointing to Himanta, who joined BJP in August 2015 from Congress after leading dissident MLAs against former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Himanta recently said he is willing to contest Lok Sabha election and is ready to contest if the party gives him a ticket.
Sources also informed that BJP was unhappy since her daughter, Pallabi Sharma was arrested last year, for allegedly getting her job as ACS officer in lieu of money.
