TEZPUR: The 18th Convocation of Tezpur University held on Friday at the University campus in Tezpur witnessed conferring of degrees upon 1218 students. The convocation was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing. Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi who is also the Chancellor of the University while addressing the graduates virtually, urged upon the young graduates to bring in semblance between technology and social aspects so that the cutting age technology can be used to expedite the welfare of humanity as well as the society they belong to.

Speaking on the occasion the Governor said, "Today's world is an extremely challenging world. We are constantly subjected to problems and challenges in our individual and collective lives. I am sure that the awardees of today's convocation will be able to utilize the knowledge, skills and experiences gained at Tezpur University to win over these problems and challenges. I wish them to become skilled and capable individuals achieving happiness not only for themselves but also for the peoples around them; and to be able to contribute meaningfully to the economic and social development of our beloved country."

The Governor hailed the Central government for the steps taken to implement New Education Policy and appreciated the fact that Tezpur university shall be among the first universities to implement the NEP and take full advantage of it.

The Governor also said that universities play a critical role in the process of nation-building. These are the centers of knowledge production and dissemination of requisite skill and training for the benefit of the society. I am happy that Tezpur University has been able to establish itself as an institution of repute within a relatively short span of time by making significant contributions in various academic fields. This is evident from the impactful scientific research and the works of community development carried out by its faculty and researchers in recent times. It is indeed satisfying to note that the faculty of Tezpur University are undertaking socially relevant researches in the areas such as removal of arsenic and fluoride in drinking water, solar and biogas as renewable energy sources, documentation of endangered languages, preservation and restoration of artifacts in Vaishnavite monasteries and digital archiving of cultural resources of the region.

Further the Governor said, "Tezpur University was created as a result of the Assam Movement which was a manifestation of the identity consciousness of the people of this region. This university is deeply committed to the local needs and aspirations. At the same time, as a modern institute of higher education, it must be able to attain the global standards of teaching and research. As the Chancellor, I do take pride to the fact that Tezpur University has been able to maintain this balance impressively.

Prof. Mukhi also called upon the graduates to continue the quest to acquire knowledge throughout their lives and utilize the knowledge to educate their fellow human beings. He said that the ever-increasing competitive vibes of today's times have hardly left any room for complacence and he hoped that Tezpur University reaches the zenith of success in the coming days and strengthen its reputation in the national and global scales.

It may be noted that the convocation conferred degrees and diplomas to a total number of 1218 students. This includes 86 PhD scholars, 725 Postgraduates, 371 Undergraduates and 36 students receiving PG Diplomas including seven international students.
