Deceased Paramita Das’s mother has questioned the government’s attempt to grant bail to the accused

GUWAHATI: Paramita Das died after a fateful accident of Maa Kamala boat that occurred in Nimatighat after it hit a ferry on September 8. The deceased mother has questioned the government's attempt to grant bail to the accused.

On Thursday, the Jorhat district judiciary had given bail to the person accused in the case.

They killed my child. How can they get bail? Is this what you call justice? Is this how the government is giving justice to the departed?" said Parimita's mother.

She added that the horrific accident occurred despite knowing that the ferry was coming from the other side.

Further, she has said that it is due to the negligence of the accused she has lost her daughter.

"They killed my child. How can they get bail? Is this what you call justice? Is this how the government is giving justice to the departed?" questioned the lamenting mother.

The accused and the owner of the boat 'Ma Kamala' are identified as Paniram Kalita along with Gautam Kalita, Utpal Dutta, Bipul Bora, and seven employees of the Inland Water Transport Department were granted bail today.

Nimatighat boat accident that took place on September 8 took the lives of Paramita Das, Bikramjit Baruah, and Indeswar Bora.

Earlier, on September 13 Dibrugarh Police arrested the owner of the ferry boat that was involved in the Nimati Ghat disaster. The owner, Pani Ram Kalita, was arrested when he was trying to get himself admitted to a hospital. Of the two boats, one was a government passenger ferry that belonged to the Inland Water Transport department and the other was a public boat. The government ferry was coming from Majuli while the other boat was moving in towards the opposite direction.

All together six persons were arrested on Saturday regarding the ferry mishap after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the Jorhat police to register criminal cases against people who are found responsible for the tragic incident.

A ferry with the name Ma Kamala capsized after it collided with another ferry, MB Tipkai at around 4 pm at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat. Ma Kamala was leaving Nimati Ghat when it hit MB Tipkai, which was coming from Majuli. The ferry that belonged to Pani Ram Kalita was involved in the collision between two boats on September 8, 2021, in which one was confirmed dead while a few were found to be missing.
