Guwahati: A thief was injured while he was trying to free from police custody at Azara in Guwahati, Assam.
On Sunday, the accused received bullet injuries after the police had to fire in self-defence. He is involved in a number of cases of robbery and dacoity.
The thief was recently arrested by a team of Azara police in Bharalumukh. The team of police was led by the Officer-in-charge of Azara Police Station, Tapan Kalita.
As per reports, the police were engaged in an encounter with the accused and had no option but to fire bullets at the thief on the morning of Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Akashdeep Singh.
According to sources, Akashdeep tried to flee after he was brought to assist the police in an anti-thief operation launched to tackle thieves in the area.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
Earlier this month, a juvenile was picked up by the police in Guwahati Railway Station on the suspicion of stealing a mobile phone from a passenger.
An Oppo mobile handset was recovered from the boy. Reportedly, the boy was unable to unlock the phone as he did not know the lock pattern. He later confessed that he had stolen the phone from a passenger who was fast asleep. The boy was then handed over to Government Railway Police (GRP) at Guwahati Railway Station for taking necessary legal action.
