Thirteen martyrs pillars inaugurated in different parts of Dhekiajuli

On 20 Sepember 1942, for unfurling the Indian National Flag at Dhekiajuli PS in Sonitpur district

DHEKIAJULI: On 20 Sepember 1942, for unfurling the Indian National Flag at Dhekiajuli PS in Sonitpur district and throwing away the Union Jack Monbor Kachari, Moniram Boro, Ratan Kochari, Mongol Kurku, Sarunath Sutia, Kumoli Devi, Khohuli Devi, Lerela Kochari, Doyal Das Panika, Tileswari Baruah and Muhiram Koch of the greater Bargaon and Naharbari mouzas of Dhekiajuli which includes Kawoimari and Jahamari of present Sonitpur district made the ultimate sacrifice for the country's independence. From that day onwards the people of Bargaon and Naharbari mouzas of Dhekiajuli which includes Kawoimari and Jahamari of present Sonitpur district observe September 20 as martyrs day. This year on Sunday which was also the martyrs day under the initiatives of the present government, 13 martyrs pillars were inaugurated by the Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal at Naharbari, Thelamar Daily Market, Katanigaon, Bhotpara, Narayanpur, Sirajuli Christian Para, Batasipur Road, Hirajuli among other areas.

Earlier in the day at around 11.00 am, Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal offered floral tributes at the statues of the 13 martyrs. Before the tribute ceremony, Singhal and several congress leaders including ex-MLA Bhima Nanda Tanti, APCC general secretary Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, senior congress leader Utpal Nandi among others offered floral tributes at the statues of 1942 martyrs of Dhekiajuli.

Veteran journalist and social worker Ramesh Chandra Borah after offering floral tributes at the martyrs statues said that the 13 martyrs of 1942 Quite India Movement at Dhekiajuli was an unique incident as in no where such a huge number of martyrs sacrificed their life in a single day during the movement in 1942. Establishment of Martyrs Pillars at different parts of Dhekiajuli Sub-Division and its inauguration has fulfilled the long-standing demands of the people of Dhekiajuli, Thelamara, Johamari and Kawoimariarea of Sonitpur District. It should be mentioned here that it was a great initiative of the present Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal who took active role in fulfilling the demands of the people of this historic Swahid Township Dhekiajuli and its adjoining areas.
