Lakhimpur: In yet another shocking incident, a mother-daughter duo were murdered in Narayanpur area of Lakhimpur District.
Following the murder of the duo on Sunday, thousands of women took to the street on Tuesday and blocked the NH-15 in Narayanpur Tiniali demanding justice for the deceased souls.
The protesting women demanded severe punishment for the accused and also asked to ensure a woman's security and safety in the society. Memorandums were submitted to the Revenue Circle Office of Narayanpur, who visited the site.
The deceased are Manju Phukan (40) and her daughter, Prashtuti (13). They were found murdered on Sunday morning, in Jalikkota village, Merbeel area under Narayanpur PS. The brother-in-law of Manju Phukan, Dinaram Phukan is alleged to be the murderer of the duo.
After finding the bodies, the villagers gathered in the victim's house. The alleged accused was threatening the widowed women over property matters. The police escorted the accused along with his family and took them under their protection.
When the bodies returned after the post-mortem, the villagers brawled in front of the house of Dinaram Phukan,. They tried to cremate the bodies of the deceased in front of the accused's house.
Unable to manage the crowd, the police resorted to lathi-charge and fired in the air to disperse the villagers. Under Section 144 of CrPC, prohibitory order was clamped in the area.
