TINSUKIA: The journalists though represent the fourth pillar of democracy, economically many of them, particularly from rural areas, lead a pitiable life without a comfortable source of income and so also they are being deprived of benefits under various government schemes. In this context, the Tinsukia District Journalists' Association (TDJA) had a threadbare discussion in a recently held executive meeting at Rangajan near Doomdooma and the TDJA, consequent upon its decision, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia on Thursday seeking preference to distressed and economically marginalized journalists and their families.

Issued jointly by Anuj Kalita and Ranajyoti Neog, president and general secretary of TDJA respectively, the memorandum demanded that the rural journalists should be brought within the purview of National Food Security Act and cards be issued to them. Benefits of Atal Amrit Abhiyan and Ayushman Bharat Yojona (PMJAY) should be extended to the journalists on priority basis. Allotment of government land to landless journalists and granting of PMAY schemes to weaker sections of journalists were also demanded. These apart, the TDJA, while expressing concern on unethical and rampant use of the word 'Press', urged the Deputy Commissioner to issue logo for genuine journalists through DIPR. It has also sought reservation of seats and quota for the children of journalists.
