TINSUKIA: Jayanta Baruah, after assuming the charge of new chairman of Tinsukia Municipal Board (TMB), undertook demolition drive of some illegal constructions, particularly multi-storey residential buildings which mushroomed in Tinsukia town flouting building rules. The ground floor of one such building was partially demolished on Wednesday in presence of an executive magistrate. In Tinsukia, there are reportedly more than 30 buildings that defied municipal guidelines.

According to reports, a G+ 4 story residential building was constructed at Khogeswar Road New Colony near Bengali Girls' HS School after proper clearance from TMB. The promoter also illegally sold out a portion of the ground floor (parking area) after constructing a flat at the cost of Rs 38 lakh. When TMB objected to such construction, the promoter disappeared and remained traceless. The TMB disconnected all the service lines of the building and the occupants numbering eight families have been living virtually without electricity during the past three years. The occupants of the building attempted to construct another floor without obtaining any permission from the TMB. The TMB squad led by chairman Baruah demolished part of the illegal structure and also the staircase leading to the 5th floor.
