Tips To Protect Yourself From The Impact Of Rapid Air Pollution

GUWAHATI: As Guwahati’s Air Quality Index is constantly deteriorating, causing respiratory problems amongst the citizens, it is very important for the people to take up measures and save themselves from the hazardous consequences of air pollution. 

With the rise of air pollution across the city, individuals with prior lung conditions are at a more intense risk of developing more serious diseases. The constant deterioration of Air Quality Index has brought the city into 13th rank in the list of 50 most polluted cities. 

As many as 36 minors were brought into the GMCH after facing issues because of the bad weather conditions. However, the Superintendent of GMCH mentioned that all the children are in a stable condition right now. 

In most cases, the minors are seen with issues such as Bronchiolitis, Asthma and Pneumonia. 36 children were admitted in the hospital in the past 24 hours due to breathing complications. Out of these 36 children, 25 were suffering from respiratory issues. 

A few days ago, Assam State Disaster Management Authority had laid off a series of do’s and don’ts for the general public. 

Few necessary measures to protect yourself from the impact of the ongoing pollution includes- Avoid outdoor exercise, one should do their workout in a well ventilated room. The general public should not opt for pollution hotspots, including the main roads and busy streets while movement. 

One should carry an inhaler in case of emergency and uneasiness. People should put on their masks whenever stepping out of the house, and protest their respiratory system.

Even if the person is inside home, he/she should make sure that all doors and windows are closed restricting dust to come inside the house.

The school authorities should make it a point to water the fields and try to keep the environment more moist. One should stop burning leaves or any sort of trash.

The public should also try and minimise the usage of cars, which is also contributing to the air pollution. The National Green Tribunal has also directed the state administration to keep a regular check on the air quality index.
