Sentinel Digital Desk

Manobi Thakur, a retired teacher of TC School and a resident of Guwahati, passed away on October 31. She had been a breast cancer survivor in 2018, but lost the battle to cancer the second time around.

She was born in Guwahati to Late Gopinath Mahanta and Late Gauri Prava Devi. She has three siblings, two brothers and an elder sister. Her childhood and schooling were in the lush hills of Shillong, where her father was posted as an Assam Government officer. Growing up in the lanes of Laban, she studied in Pine Mount School and also later joined St. Mary’s, where she also did her graduation in English Honours. As the capital moved to Dispur in 1973, so did the family, and Manobi subsequently joined the Gauhati University where she achieved her Masters in English Literature. She fell in love with Shantanu Thakur, a classmate of hers from her university, and married him in 1978. They have two children, Ashok and Jeuty.

Manobi worked as a lecturer in many educational institutions such as Nagaon Girls College, Pragjyotish College, Government Higher Secondary Schools of Dhuburi and Dibrugarh, and finally joined TC Government Girls HS School in Guwahati in 1993, where she worked as an English subject teacher for the higher secondary students till 2015.

She has been an extremely kind, gentle, hardworking and dedicated individual, who always believed in action and led by example. She lived her different roles, of a daughter, sibling, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, teacher and friend, with immense grace, love and sincerity. She loved her family, good food, Shillong, flowers, travelling, cooking, knitting, journaling, peace and solitude, seeking happiness in the simple moments of life.

As a daughter, I feel proud and blessed to have been born to a woman so pure, warm and selfless.

Today, it has been a month since her demise. With love, longing, grief and a prayer in our hearts, we wish for her eternal peace.
