Two arrested with brown sugar worth Rs 20 lakh in Karbi Anglong

BOKAJAN: In a major development, Karbi Anglong Police seized a huge quantity of suspected brown sugar from a Bolero pick-up at the inter-State Dillai gate over NH-36 in East Karbi Anglong on Tuesday.

Based on specific information about movement of contraband drugs, the police personnel manning the inter-State Dillai gate set up a naka check over NH-36 near Lahorijan BOP. A Bolero pick-up was intercepted and on frisking, the police found 649 grams of brown sugar concealed under 52 soap cases inside the vehicle. The approximate face value of the seized drugs is above Rs 20 lakh in the black market.

Briefing the media, Bokajan SDPO John Das said, "We have arrested the driver Moinul Haque and helper Ali Hussain in this connection. Both are residents of Jamunamukh in Hojai district. As per the preliminary interrogation, we have come to know that both received the drugs at Dimapur and were supposed to deliver it someone at Doboka bypass. Further investigations are on."

The smuggling of drugs and contrabands, including ganja, has shot up with over a dozen such cases of drug haul in recent times along the Assam-Nagaland inter-State border. Recently, the Khatkhati police seized a truck trying to smuggle 210 kg cannabis into Assam through the NH-39. Earlier, the Khatkhati police seized a huge consignment of sedative SP capsules worth Rs 3 lakh from a slum adjacent to the Assam-Nagaland border in May, 2020.
