LAKHIMPUR: Two BJP leaders were attacked by some unidentified miscreants on Sunday as a result of which they sustained serious injuries. One of these victim BJP leaders was identified as Paramananda Chunkrang, former Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK) leader as well as former Dhakuakhana Zila Parishad member, while the other is former Sanmilita Gana Shakti and MMK leader Baidyanath Payang.
As per the report, a gang of the miscreants forcefully abducted the BJP leaders to the Brahmaputra embankment from Bakulguri Tiniali while they were going to attend a meeting of the local Gaon Panchayat. The gang was waiting for them and allegedly attacked them, asking them why they had joined the BJP. Notably, both of them joined the BJP on August 2 after quitting an ethnic political organization.
During the attack, Paramananda Chungkrang sustained serious injury in his hand while the other was also severely beaten up. Later, the miscreants attempted to kill them by throwing them into the Brahmaputra. At that time, a few local people under the Kherkota Gaon Panchayat rescued them after hearing their shrieks. Then some BJP members arrived at the spot and send the injured persons to Dhemaji for advanced treatment.
Later, though Dhakuakhana police arrived and launched an operation to catch the culprits, police could not locate anyone of them. Regarding the issue, Dhakuakhana Mandal BJP president Sunil Doley and wife of Paramananda Chungkrang lodged separate FIRs against 18 persons at Dhakuakhana Police Station alleging their involvement in the attack. Dhakuakhana Police registered a case No: 165/19 US- 120(B)/148/341/326/307/394/364 IPC.
On Monday, three of the miscreants surrendered in front of Lakhimpur ASP Pranab Kumar Doley. They were identified as Kherkota regional TMPK president, Liju Doley, son of Nalin Doley, secretary Raj Kumar Doley, son of Bhaskar Doley, and member Kishor Doley, son of Bineswar Doley.
On the other hand, BJP State executive member Basanta Saikia condemned the attack on BJP activists. “Anyone can support any political ideology. It is a democratic right. None can prevent one from enjoying one’s democratic right by issuing threats of violence,” he stated.
Though the incident is considered to be an outcome of political conflict, the leaders of the TMPK (Takam Mising Porin Kebang) denied it.
