Two Congress, two independent ward commissioners join saffron party in Lakhimpur

Finally, the ruling party BJP has bagged the Narayanpur Municipal Board of Lakhimpur district as an outcome of a political development that took a new twist

LAKHIMPUR: Finally, the ruling party BJP has bagged the Narayanpur Municipal Board of Lakhimpur district as an outcome of a political development that took a new twist on Friday. It became possible with two winner Congress Ward Commissioners and two independent Ward Commissioners under this urban body joining BJP increasing the number of ruling party's Ward Commissioners up to 7. As a result of this development, it has become crystal clear that the saffron party will constitute all Municipal Boards of Lakhimpur district including the Narayanpur Municipal Board along with the North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria and Dhakuakhana Municipal Boards

Notably, the Opposition party Congress has registered itself to be the major party in the Narayanpur Municipal Board by winning 5 seats out of 10 in the recent Municipal Board Election. In this civic body, BJP has won 3 seats and independent candidates has secured the rest 2 seats. As per result Congress candidates Kushal Neog defeated BJP candidate Ami Hazarika Baruah in Ward No, 1(A), Rupa Borah defeated BJP candidate Diganta Bhuyan in Ward No, 2, Maya Chandak defeated BJP candidate Anima Konwar Namchoom in Ward No, 3(B), Jyotika Saikia defeated BJP candidate Sewali Phukan Neog in Ward No. 4 and Pallabi Hazarika Bonia defeated BJP candidate Gunamoni Das in Ward No. 5(A). On the other hand, BJP candidate Suramoni Borah defeated Congress candidate Rita Neog in Ward No. 1(B), Biraj Bhuyan defeated Congress candidate Puna Das in Ward No. 3(A) and Junu Doley Deuri defeated Congress candidate Sarothi Deuri in Ward No. 6(A). Similarly, independent candidates Harish Chandak won the election by defeating BJP candidate Pawan Kumar Baruah in Ward No. 5(B) while Joyamai Deuri defeated BJP candidate Jibanti Deuri in Ward No. 6(B).

Out of them, Congress Ward Commissioners Maya Chandak and Pallabi Hazarika Bonia, independent Ward Commissioners Harish Chandak and Joyamai Deuri on Friday joined BJP in a ceremonial programme held at State BJP's head office located at Hengerabari in Guwahati. State BJP's chief organizing secretary Phani Sarmah, Chief Minister's political secretary Jayanta Malla Baruah, Lakhimpur district unit BJP in-charge Ashok Bhattarai, State vice-president Bijuli Kalita Medhi were present in the programme and they welcomed the ward commissioners to the party. It is known that the four ward commissioners later called on Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma too.

Harish Chandak and his wife Maya Chandak were the former chairpersons of Congress-led Narayanpur Nagar Samiti. Later they joined BJP. Both of them aspired BJP's ticket to contest in the recent Municipal Board Election. But the party denied them ticket as a result of which Harish Chandak contested in the election as an independent candidate while Maya Chandak was in fray as a Congress nominated candidate.

Similarly, the saffron party denied tickets to Pallabi Hazarika Bonia and Joyamai Deuri too and then the former contested in the election as a Congress candidate while the latter managed to win the election as independent candidate. BJP's State president Bhabesh Kalita expelled all four of them for six years on February 23 along with 9 more party activists of Lakhimpur for violating party's decision and discipline. It is speculated that Harish Chandak would be projected as the chairperson of Narayanpur Municipal Board.
