GUWAHATI: The Assam Motor Workers' Association (AMWA) has called for a two-day 'Chakka Bandh' on Monday and Tuesday.
According to AMWA, the 48-hour Chakka Bandh is called in a protest against atrocities of the state government upon the motor vehicles and their owners.
Following the Chakka Bandh in the state, all types of public transport including taxis and busses will remain off for two consecutive days.
The major shutdown in the transport sector is a protest against the government as the motor workers were faced harassment with fines and taxes on vehicles rather than getting relief after being affected by the lockdown.
Meanwhile, a joint forum of central trade unions has called for a nationwide shutdown (Bharat Bandh) for two days from Monday to Wednesday.
Workers' Unions of different sectors that include banks, oil, steel, coal, income tax, insurance, postal and telecom have called for the nationwide strike.
As informed by the power ministry, the Bharat Bandh will start from 06:00 am on Monday 28 March and it will continue till 06:00 am on Wednesday 30 March.
The trade unions calling for Bandh consists of INTUC (Indian National Trade Union Congress), TUCC (Trade Union Coordination Centre), AITUC (All Indian Trade Union Congress), LPF (Labour Progressive Federation), CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions), SEWA (Self Employed Women Association), UTUC (United Trade Union Congress), AIUTUC (All India United Trade Union Centre) and AICCTU (All Indian Central Council of Trade Union).
1. Banks, railways, transportation and electricity sectors will get affected following the two-day nationwide shutdown.
2. The State Bank of India and other various public sector banks informed that their service might be affected.
3. However, SBI has made certain arrangements to ensure the smooth functioning of its branches in different regions across the country.
4. In Assam, all public transport including busses and taxis will not be available for service for 48 hours.
5. In West Bengal, all government offices will remain open and it is compulsory for employees to report to duty.
