Two drug peddlers apprehended in Kokrajhar; one shot at

KOKRAJHAR: Continuing the crackdown on smuggling of drugs in the State, two drug traffickers of Tripura were apprehended by police in Kokrajhar on Thursday morning. One of them allegedly tried to snatch the service rifle of a police officer and was shot at.

According to police sources, the police team on Wednesday intercepted a vehicle bearing registration no AS- 01 DD/ 8635 at about 8 pm and apprehended two drug peddlers. The drug peddlers were identified as Suman Namo (26), son of Sadan Namo of Meghaliband Panchaguri under Sundartila police station of West Tripura; and Rahul Sarkar (20), son of Binoy Bhusan Sarkar of Meghaliband Panchaguri under Sundartila police station of the same State. Sources said that during thorough checking of the vehicle, a hidden compartment was found where about 55 packets of ganja weighing 350 kg were concealed. The ganja was seized. The truck was coming from Tripura and going towards Bihar.

Sources further said that during further investigation it was revealed by the driver, Suman Namo that he concealed two packets of ganja near a road bifurcating from the National Highway towards Bhaoraguri. Accordingly, the accused was taken to the spot for recovery of the concealed packets of ganja. The police team reached the place on Thursday morning and recovered the two packets of ganja. Suddenly, the accused person allegedly snatched the pistol of the police officer present and was about to fire at the police team. Sensing imminent danger to life, the other officer immediately fired upon the accused. The bullet hit the accused on his right leg below the knee. He was shifted to Kokrajhar RN Brahma Civil Hospital for treatment from where he was referred to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital. Further follow-up action is going on. However, miscreants burnt the truck to destroy evidence.
