Two Girls Rescued From Hojai District in Assam

GUWAHATI: Two girls have been rescued by police from Hojai district, police said on Friday.

As per reports, one of the girls was taken to Hojai by a man after marrying her, while another girl was brought there by another one of Nagaland's Dimapur town.

Police officials in association with the district childline members, based on a tip-off, carried out a search operation in an area in Hojai district on Thursday evening and rescued the girl, who is 16 years old.

The man, who brought the girl to Hojai, fled away. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend him.

In another incident, police recovered a girl who was brought to Hojai by a man of Dimapur in Nagaland. Both the rescued girls have been sent to the Hojai Child Welfare Centre after their medical test.

Forty children of Assam were recovered from Sikkim and two men, suspected to be involved with a human trafficking racket, were arrested in July this year.

A human trafficking racket was busted and 31 people, including seven minor girls, were rescued by police in Baksa district in June.

According to data available with the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), a total of 201 human trafficking cases were registered in Assam in the year 2019. The state secured third ranking in the nation after Maharashtra (282 cases) and Andhra Pradesh (245 cases).
