ULFA-I Cadre Surrenders Before Assam Police

Guwahati: In a joint operation conducted by Charaideo Police, 12th Assam Rifles and 149 CRPF, a cadre of United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent (ULFA-I) surrendered before the Assam police.

"On constant persuasion and CI OPs conducted by Charaideo District Police, 12th Assam Rifles and 149 CRPF unit posted in the district, the below mentioned ULFA(I) cadre have surrendered with Arms and Ammunitions at Office of the Superintendent of Police, Charaideo", an official statement from the Assam police said on Thursday.

The ULFA-I member was identified as Nilutpol Tamuli alias Jagaran Asom.

Arms and ammunitions like one 7.62mm MQ81 assault rifle, three magazines, 148 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 25.700 kg of RDX, added Sudhakara Singh were recovered from him.

In last year, October, a top leader of the ULFA (I) too had surrendered before the Assam Police. The ULFA-I leader who had decided to join the mainstream is Jugen Mili, who is popularly known as Himalay Asom.

Mili was the third ULFA-I leader to surrender in a year after Drishti Rajkhowa and Jibon Moran quit militancy and returned to the mainstream.

Interestingly, Jibon Moran, who was also a senior leader of the ULFA-I, had surrendered before the Dibrugarh police just a few months ago.

Himalay Asom had joined the United Liberation Front of Asom in 1996. He hails from Disangmukh, Dokla which is located in the district of Sivasagar in Assam.

The news of Himalay Asom's surrender had come as a big relief to the Assam government who is taking every possible step to bring militancy down in the state.
