ULFA-Independent cadre surrenders in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH: An active cadre of the ULFA (Independent) surrendered to the Army in Dibrugarh on Sunday. The ULFA (I) cadre identified as Madhab Chetia, alias Suraj Asom, surrendered at the Jeypore Army camp in Naharkatia in the presence of senior Army and police officials. Chetia had reportedly escaped from an ULFA (I) camp in Myanmar. He handed over a hand grenade to the Army authorities while surrendering.

According to Army sources, the surrendered ULFA (I) cadre is a resident of Disangmukh in Sivasagar district. He had joined the banned outfit in 2021 and had undergone weapon training in Myanmar. Significantly, this was the fourth surrender by ULFA (I) militants in the past one week in upper Assam.

Last Thursday. two ULFA (I) militants identified as Palash Moran and Montu Moran had surrendered before the police in Tinsukia district. Similarly on November 2, another Myanmar-trained ULFA (I) militant identified as Ashique Ali, alias Riyaz Asom, had surrendered before the Superintendent of Police of Sivasagar district with a China-made hand grenade.

Ali had reportedly joined the militant outfit in April 2022 and had recently fled from a training camp in Myanmar. Significantly there has been several instances of ULFA (I) cadres fleeing or deserting their camps in Myanmar in recent times.
