HAFLONG: The Unau Leaders’ Coordination Committee (ULCC) vehemently condemned the attack on a bank manager in Hailakandi district named L. Tun Khan Siam. ULCC is the conglomeration of Hmar Inpui Assam Hills Region, Kuki Inpi Assam, Biate Devanpui Assam, Vaiphei People’s Council Assam, and the Young Mizo Association, Haflong.

The press release stated that the ULCC, Assam, vehemently condemned the horrendous attack on L. Tun Khan Siam s/o L. Hauzagin. The appalling incident occurred on September 27 when Siam was on his way back home from his bank. Siam Paite was waylaid in broad daylight in an area dominated by the Meitei community. It can be cited as the first pre-meditated attack perpetrated by the Meiteis on innocent minority Zo-ethnic tribal peoples on the soil of Assam since the start of the mayhem between majority Meiteis and minority non-Naga tribals in Manipur on May 3. The attack on Siam in a Meitei-dominated area has not only threatened his life but also seriously put into doubt the safety of other ethnic tribal residents, tribal-owned or run business establishments, tribal workers, and service holders, especially from the Kuki, Hmar

Mizo, Zomi, and other kindred tribes in Meitei-dominated areas of Assam. Such reoccurrence may have the potential of unfortunately spilling over the ongoing ethnic tension in Manipur to the peaceful state of Assam.

Considering the sensitive and protracted nature of the ongoing violence between the majority Meiteis and the Zo-ethnic tribals (Kuki-Zomi-Hmar-Mizo) in Manipur, the Joint Apex bodies of the Unau tribals, viz. Hmar Inpui, Kuki Inpi, Biate Devanpui, Vaiphei Peoples’ Council, and Young Mizo Association, had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam and DIG, Dispur, Assam, on the urgent need for taking up full measures to prevent any attempts that could escalate tensions among the Meiteis and Unau tribals of Assam.
