Veer Lachit Sena Warns To Launch Jihad Against 'Non-Assamese' Candidates In Municipal Elections

In view of the upcoming municipality election scheduled on 6 March, the Veer Lachit Sena informed that an Assamese Jihad will be announced if political parties field a non-Assamese candidate.

GUWAHATI: Ahead of the municipal election in Assam, the Veer Lachit Sena made it clear that a non-Assamese candidate will not be allowed to take part from any political party and if the candidates are found to be a non-Assamese an Assamese Jihad will be announced.

On Friday 11 February, the members of the Veer Lachit Sena warned the political parties in that state to not field any of the non-Assamese candidates for the arriving municipality elections to be held across Assam.

On mentioning about the election, Shrinkhal Chaliha the leader of the group said that Veer Lachit Sena wants all the parties in Assam to make sure that they do not provide candidature to any person who is a non-Assamese.

Veer Lachit Sena chief further warned the parties saying that if any non-Assamese is given candidature for elections then there will be consequences.

He demanded that the candidate for participating in the election must follow the criteria of being an indigenous person from Assam.

Chaliha further said that if it is found that the particular criteria are not followed in Sivasagar then the Veer Lachit Sena will take action by opposing the party with the non-Assamese candidate in all the other wards where it will contest the election.

The leader continued saying that an Assamese Jihad will be introduced against the political parties who will field Non-Assamese candidates.

The election commission earlier provided the last date of filing the nomination as 15 February. The analysis of the entire applications field will be done on 17 February and by 20 February candidature will have to be withdrawn.

In a new development, this is the first time that the Municipal election will be held in the state through EVMs (Electronic Voting Machine).

The Assam Election Commission informed that the poll elections for 80 municipal boards will be conducted on 6 March 2022 and the counting of votes will be on 9 March.

Meanwhile, it is informed that the Silchar Municipal Board Elections will not be conducted during this period as the matter is sub judice.

Among the 80 municipal boards, there are a total of 977 wards in different parts of the state which means there are 977 seats.
