DIGBOI: Bordumsa police arrested at least three inter-state opium smugglers from Assam-Arunachal border in Tinsukia district here on Sunday evening. What was the irony about the modus operandi of the smugglers was the use of the vegetable-carrying vehicles to transport the contraband from Arunachal's Medu to Tinsukia district duping and dusting the eyes of the police throughout easily.
The arrested inter-state smugglers who were netted by the team of Assam police led by Hemanta Kumar Boro, the SDPO Margherita and Bordumsa OC Nitumoni Changmai were identified as Simanta Chetiya (37), Udditya Borgohain (53) both hailing from Dirok Amguri village and Lakhinath Borgohain (30) of No 1 Horu Dirak village of Tinsukia district.
"We recovered around 100 grams of clothed-opium which they had procured from a dealer in Arunachal's Medu close to Chongkham in Namsai district sharing a border with Tinsukia," informed Bordumsa OC Nitumoni Changmai.
According to a source, around 15 NDPS cases were registered and 30 accused were sent to custody by Bordumsa police over a period of around 8 months which in itself is self-explanatory about the success rate of Assam police team in Bordumsa.
"Acting on a special format, we could successfully cow down the smugglers who were already under our radar since the morning," Boro, the top cop of the Margherita Subdivision said.
"That the smugglers from Assam and Arunachal are operating in close coordination in hand and gloves around the border areas have been ascertained exposing the inter-state smuggling of the contrabands," Boro added.
"Unless the local people across the border take the stride and perform a pro-active role to counter the growing menace of procuring, peddling and consuming of various contraband substances, police alone cannot bring about the desirable outputs," said Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri.
Lauding the efforts of his team for adding yet another feather to the police's cap, the top cop of the district said 'the challenge is common irrespective of geography as such it demands a joint and concerted action from the public too in order to nip the menace in buds'. Meanwhile, registering case No 45/2022, the three inter-state smugglers were prosecuted u/s 17(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act.
