Veteran Congress Leader Dr Bhumidhar Barman Hospitalized, CM Sonowal Assures Support

Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Assam Dr Bhumidhar Barman has been admitted to a private hospital in critical condition.

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on April 9 visited Dispur Hospital in Guwahati to take stock of the health condition of the former chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhumidhar Barman.

The former minister was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday and is under treatment at ICU.

Further Sonowal on his Twitter handle wrote, "Visited former Assam CM, Dr Bhumidhar Barman at Dispur Hospital in Guwahati this morning and enquired about his health. I pray for the speedy recovery of the veteran leader and assure all necessary support for his treatment."

Earlier, APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora and other party leaders visited the hospital to take stock of his health.

Dr Bhumidhar Barman is an M.B.B.S. from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh in 1958.

He was also a Member of Legislative Assembly-

> From 1967 to 1972 as MLA.

> From 1973 to 1978 - Minister of State, Revenue and Education.

> From 1983 to 1985 - Minister, Health & Family Welfare.

> From 1991 to 1996 - Minister, Education, Health & Panchayat and after the sudden demise of Hiteswar Saikia the then CM Assam, Barman took the oath of CM on 22nd April 1996 till the formation of New Govt.

> From 2001 to 2006 - Minister, Health & FW/Assam Accord/P&RD.

> From 2006 to 2011 - Minister, Revenue & DM, Assam Accord, ART/Higher Education/PPG.

> From May 2011 - MLA & Adviser to C.M.(Agril), Assam.

He held the post of CM again in 2010 when the then CM Tarun Gogoi was on leave on medical grounds. Currently, his son, Diganta Barman is the Congress candidate from Barkhetry.
