Veteran CPI leader Drupad Borgohain passes away

Guwahati: Veteran socialist leader, Parliamentarian and Secretary of Communist Party of India (CPI) Drupad Borgohain passed away this morning after a prolonged illness in Dibrugarh.

Borgohain was 76 at the time of his death and was undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Dibrugarh. The CPI leader was suffering from kidney related ailments.

Born on November 7, 1941 at Maduri village in Sivasagar district, Borgohain studied at Zira High School and Sibsagar College, Joysagar. A teacher by profession, he worked at the Maduri Middle Vernacular School during 1960–1961. He went on to teach at the Chakimukh Middle English School between October 1961 and January 1963, and then at Zira Higher Secondary Multi-Purpose School from 1 February 1963 until December 31 1982. He became a CPI party member in April 1963. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha between 1998 and 2004, a former MLA in the Assam Assembly and former president of the Assam state council of All India Kishan Sabha.

He became a CPI party member in April 1963. He was active in the All India Youth Federation between 1965 and 1978, being elected to its National Council. He served as Joint Secretary of the Assam State Council of AIYF between 1965 and 1968, then becoming the president of the Assam State Council.
