Veteran journalist Gokul Sarma of Margherita breathed his last on reaching a private nursing home in Dibrugarh on Friday.

TINSUKIA: Veteran journalist Gokul Sarma of Margherita breathed his last on reaching a private nursing home in Dibrugarh on Friday. He was 78. His sudden demise has shocked the media fraternity in Tinsukia district.

Sarma, a prolific writer and poet, was 2-term president (1991-1993, 1993-1995) of Tinsukia District Journalists' Association (TDJA). He was Margherita correspondent of two vernacular newspapers and recipient of Journalists' Pension which was announced a month back. Sarma was ailing for some time and was shifted to Dibrugarh for better treatment only on Friday.

As the shocking news of his demise reached Tinsukia Press Club where an executive meeting of TDJA was in progress, the meeting was immediately cut short and a condolence meeting was held and a minute silence was observed. Various journalist organizations, that included TDJA, press clubs of Doomdooma, Digboi, Tinsukia, Saikhowa, Kakopathar, Sadiya and Margherita Journalists' Association, besides Assam Union of Working Journalists and NFRMU, expressed condolences to the members of the bereaved family. He leaves behind his wife, son and a daughter.
