Veteran theatre personality Atul Chandra Sarma passes away in Tezpur

TEZPUR: Eminent stage theatre personality Atul Chandra Sarma passed away after a prolonged illness at his residence here on Saturday morning. He was 88 and left behind his wife and two sons. His death has cast a pall of gloom over the entire Assamese theatre fraternity of the region. Sarma was closely associated with the art and culture scene of Assam for over five decades. His formative years were spent in the midst of cultural icons like Kalaguru Bishnu Prashad Rabha and Natasurya Phani Sharma. Sarma has also received the noted Natya Silpi Award given by Axom Xahitya Xabha. Ban Theatre, Sonitpur Press Club, Bhoomi, Sonitpur Journalist Union, Jangam, Tezpur Xahitya Xabha, Joymoti Sangha, Sonitpur Silpi Samaj, Grahan Udyan Samittee and hundreds of cultural activists, social workers, members of various cultural groups and organisations, local artistes and Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava paid floral tributes to him and also condoled his demise. His cremation took place at Rudrapad on Saturday. In his condolence message, renowned stage actor and director Bhupen Sarma said, “Atul Chandra Sarma’s contributions to the growth of Assamese Society in the State would be remembered for generations to come. He was a versatile genius who had dedicated his entire life for art and culture. He was not only an artiste but also very amiable person and the contribution he had made in the field of art and culture were truly outstanding and unforgettable. I convey my sympathy to the bereaved family.”
