TINSUKIA/DOOMDOOMA: Veteran Trade Unionist, Asam Chah Karmachari Sangha(ACKS) central committee Secretary Girish Barpatra Gohain passed away at Assam Medical College Hospital (ACMH), Dibrugarh on Monday. He died of COVID-19 and was also suffering from diabetes, and other ailments for a long time. He was 64 and is survived by his wife and three sons. In 1988 he was elected Secretary, ACKS, Doomdooma Branch and elevated to Secretary, central committee ACKS in 2000. By dint of his hard work and dedication he brought new lease of life to this only trade union organization of tea garden employees in Assam and successfully negotiated many a bilateral agreements with the tea managements to his credit. He rose to the post of General Secretary, INTUC (Plantation), Assam Branch, member, Provident Fund Trust, member, Assam Medical Board, member, Standing Labour Committee, Director, ATEICOL and Secretary, Plantation Federation of Assam. He had also the privilege of attending the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference as a delegate from India. In 2018, ACKS in its Tinsukia conference conferred on him the title of 'Mohan Sramik Neta'(Great Labour Leader). His death has cast a pall of gloom in Doomdooma Tea Circle and has been widely mourned by a number of organizations.
