Villagers attack 3 brutally on suspicion of witchcraft in Chirang district

BONGAIGAON: Three persons including two women were brutally assaulted by villagers at Bhurbasti under Runikhata PS of Chirang district. According to reports, a group of villagers attacked the two families of Prameswar Sutradhar and Lugai Basumatary, on suspicion of witch-hunting at late-night of Saturday.

The injured persons are - Parmeswar Sutradhar and his wife Manjula Satrudhar and Lugai Basumatary's mother Gendi Basumatary who was seriously injured in the attack.

"They did not ask us any question. They attacked our families over the suspicion of practicing witch craft," said a family member of the victims.

Meanwhile, Runikhata Police arrived on the spot and recovered the victims. They were admitted to a local hospital. Talking to the mediapersons, Chirang SP Sudhakar Sing said that the situation has been neutralized by the police. "Our OC, Runikhata immediately rescued all the victims and has registered a case. To neutralize the situation, a peace meeting was organized at the village on Sunday morning where Chirang Additional SP was also present. The villagers have understood their mistakes and assured police not to repeat such incidents again. Meanwhile, the investigation is on," SP, said.
