LAKHIMPUR: Voters’ Party International (VPI) organized a mass convention to protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 on Monday in Lakhimpur.

The protest programme was held with VPI Lakhimpur unit president Fazalur Rahman in the chair at Uttar-Purbanchal Sanskritik Sangha auditorium, Ahuchaolgaon in North Lakhimpur town. VPI national head Bharat Gandhi became vocal against the controversial Act along with other leaders of the party.

“At a time when the movement for economic freedom is underway across the nation, the attempts of diverting the people from their judicious rights by the rulers have been unabatedly going on since the post-Independence period. The present government has taken up such an attitude with regard to the anti-CAA agitation too,” said Bharat Gandhi, severely criticizing the government for its alleged attempt to divert the people from genuine issues.

VPI State president Lalit Pegu delivered a lecture opposing the CAA. He said that votership was the constitutional right of citizens and appealed to the people to intensify struggle to achieve that right. In the programme, VPI state executive Abu Sama, Sahidur Rahman, dignitaries of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units, women and youth wings took part along with local organizations and prominent personalities.
