DARRANG: Drowning is probably the most unfortunate of deaths for people. In one such incident, two minor girls who were out fishing in a pond near their house in Simamuria Bhakatpara area in Darrang district slipped and were engulfed by the pond waters.
The deceased minors have been identified as Silsina Marak and Martina Marak.
The girls who did not reach home from their fishing session for hours sent a chill down the parents' spine and they suspected it was a case of kidnapping.
Following that suspicion, the parents lodged a complaint in the nearest police station and the police after knowing that the two girls went fishing launched a water operation in the pond and was successful in recovering the bodies from the pond.
The bodies are sent to the nearest hospital for post-mortem and other post-death formalities.
A month ago in a similar incident, two youths lost their lives after they were drowned in the pond waters in the Jogighopa area in Assam's Bongaigaon district on August 12.
Both the youths were later identified as Umacharan Das and Kalyan Das.
The two youths were out taking a bath to beat the summer heat when they went too far from the bank and later could not battle the pond waters and fell into the watery grave.
Drowning is regarded as the 3rd biggest killer in the world with more than 3,20,000 deaths a year. It is also found that people aged 25 and less die more due to drowning than any other age group.
Assam is basically a water-prone state, with thousands of deaths every year from floods which have been yearly happening in the state for many years now.
That being said, the other drowning cases which happen due to playing in the water or for hobbies like angling in Assam are like adding more trouble to the already troubled state of Assam which battles problems like floods and landslides every year.
