Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika inspects breached embankment of River Nonoi

Water Resource Minister Pijush Minister on Tuesday visited the breached portion of embankment of River Nonoi at village Janasewa-Duwaripara under Sipajhar LAC in the Darrang district.

MANGALDAI: Water Resource Minister Pijush Minister on Tuesday visited the breached portion of embankment of River Nonoi at village Janasewa-Duwaripara under Sipajhar LAC in the Darrang district.

The portion of the embankment was breached by the overflowing water of the river on Monday night. The minister also interacted with the residents of the area affected by the sudden impact of the river. The rising water of the Nonoi River breached the embankment, damaged roads and affected about 25 villages.

Following inspection of the breached embankment, the minister instructed the chief engineer of the water resource department accompanying him to install geo-tubes in the damaged portion and start the reconstruction work of the breached embankment from tomorrow onwards. Besides, the minister interacted with the affected people and assured them that the breached portion of the river embankment would be repaired and restored in the next 7-10 days. During the visit, the minister also asked the Darrang District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey for immediate flood relief measures to the affected people. He further asked the DC to provide prompt help and support to the people, whose houses were fully or partially damaged, under the State Government’s Disaster Management fund.

Later while addressing the media, minister Hazarika stated that Water Resources Department had taken preventive measures to combat loss caused by flood and had achieved positive results. In comparison to the last year’s 41 breach cases in various places, this year embankment breach has occurred in five places. He also said that earlier the restoration work of the embankment would take three months but now this had been reduced to 7 days with the quick installation of geo tubes in the breached portion.
