Water Resources Minister Piyush Hazarika reviews dyke works in Hailakandi, Karimganj

SILCHAR : Water Resources Minister Piyush Hazarika on Wednesday reviewed various on-going government projects in Hailakandi and Karimganj.

Hazarika, who is also the Guardian Minister of these two districts of Barak Valley reviewed the steps taken by the PWD to convert an embankment located on the banks of the river Shingla into a pucca road between Phanirbanda and the Durlabhpur area in Karimganj. Speaking to the mediapersons he said, “I have also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj District to inspect the construction on a regular basis.”

Local people had also expressed their satisfaction with the work, the Minister added. Maintaining that in the past, floods and erosion by the Shingla river had caused extensive damage in the Nivia Market area of Ratabari constituency, Hazarika said he had assessed the progress of the projects taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore for the reconstruction of the areas damaged by floods and erosion.

Earlier on the day, he visited the Bakrihaor area of Algapur constituency in Hailakandi and reviewed the progress of the flood control measures, construction of the embankment, and repairs to sections damaged by the river under the SOPD-G scheme at a cost of about Rs 15.3 cr on the left side of the Barak River. He had directed the officials and contractors of the Water Resources Department to complete these projects at the earliest possible time.

On Thursday, Hazarika would make an on-spot review of the Bethukandi dyke and sluice gate construction work.
