Week-long special camp of Gargaon College NSS Unit concludes

The Gargaon College NSS Unit, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college organized a week-long special camp from February 7 to February 13 in the adopted village of the college, Longkak Gohain Gaon.

SIVASAGAR: The Gargaon College NSS Unit, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college organized a week-long special camp from February 7 to February 13 in the adopted village of the college, Longkak Gohain Gaon.

In the inaugural ceremony, Dr Rimjim Borah, the Programme Officer of NSS unit of Gargaon College outlined the objective of organizing the camp. Dr Borah stated that the camp was to address the issues of environment conservation, health & hygiene, cleanliness, youth and women empowerment and create awareness among the villagers regarding these issues in tune with the spirit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr Romen Loying, physician, who graced the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest appreciated the NSS Unit of Gargaon College for taking such an initiative of organizing the camp for overall development of the village. A group of volunteers comprising of 100 students undertook diverse activities in the village. With the aim of sustainable development of the village, various activities were organized like cleanliness drive, tree plantation drive, free eye check-up camp in collaboration with ERC Eye Care Eye Hospital, Sivasagar, training on yoga, art and craft, music, dance, recitation for children, self-defence training for girls, training on mushroom cultivation, vermicompost production training, training on creation of decorative items from waste materials for women.

Dr Trishnali Saikia, who provided training on the scientific method of mushroom cultivation, said that women would not only become self-reliant by mushroom cultivation, they could also occupy the global market through mushroom production. Dr Arundhuti Bordoloi provided a training session on how women can take up vermicompost production as an entrepreneurial activity. The week-long activities of the programme came to an end with a cultural exchange programme among the children, women of Longkak Gohain Gaon and the NSS volunteers.

In the closing ceremony of the NSS camp, Dr Rimjim Borah, the Programme Officer expressed her thanks to the faculty, the distinguished guests from the village and the resource persons, the NSS volunteers for making the camp a great success. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, lauded the efforts of the NSS unit in organizing the camp for the development of the village. Dr Mahanta also appreciated the practice of the NSS unit of the college for social causes and the sense of dedication with which the volunteers carried out the camp activities under the supervision of Dr Rimjim Borah.
