GAURISAGAR: Bornil Baruah, the 3-year old boy of Ajit Baruah and Barnali Baruah of Bhatiapar village on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district, has been suffering from blood cancer since he was 21 months old.

Doctors have informed Bornil's family that he needed a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplantation is a costly procedure and his family struggled to arrange money for the transplant. At that time, Srimonta Dutta, a young and energetic social worker of Charing Duarahpar who himself is suffering from cancer, came forward to help the family. Artistes like Pranjana Dutta, Sukannya Rajguru, Devasish Borthakur and Devasish Sarmah also joined in the campaign to collect fund for Bornil's treatment. Srimonta and his team collected Rs 1,95, 926 and they recently handed over the money to Bornil's grandmother, grandfather and uncle in the presence of journalists, social workers and neighbours. Earlier, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had assured to provide free treatment to Bornil but due to lockdown and the pandemic, Bornil has been undergoing treatment in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
