Wild elephant enters Nagaon DC's residential campus, destroys boundary wall

NAGAON: A male wild elephant from Dhing Chapori entered the residential campus of the Deputy Commissioner, Nagaon, early on Thursday morning. It also took a walk across the lawn as well as the orchard. The elephant also destroyed a boundary wall in the DC's official bungalow, sources said.

Meanwhile, the police on duty in the campus immediately managed to take the elephant out of the campus following which the wild jumbo was chased by forest personnel throughout the small town during which the elephant also demolished the entry gate of Nagaon Bengali Boys' HS School. Subsequently, the elephant was pushed back towards a water body near Jashingfa Resort at Morikolong - Mahrul agricultural field by the forest personnel, sources said, adding that the elephant entered Chakorigaon and then it took shelter in a jungle in the Teliapohukata area after crossing the Kolong River.

The elephant was still there in the Teliapohukata area till the time of filing this report and the forest personnel from Nagaon Forest Division were deployed to keep a watch on the movement of the wild jumbo.

While speaking to the local media persons here, DFO Bhaskar Deka said that the elephant was seen near Dhing a couple of days back and thereafter it was traced again in the Nagaon Jajori area on Wednesday. He said that the forest personnel would try to escort the elephant at night to the Laokhuwa reserve forest or some other place. He, however, urged the people of the area not to panic or harm the elephant.
