Numaligarh: Due to wild elephants wreaking havoc, villagers are spending sleepless nights at Numaligarh-Morangi area in Golaghat.
Four houses of villagers of No.4 Rangbang and Jackson Grant village under Morangi Revenue Circle and Bukhial Forest Best office under Golaghat forest division were wrecked by a herd of wild elephants on Wednesday night. Houses of Lakhyeswar Das, Tukheswar Das and Junu Rabidas of No.4 Rangbang were destroyed by a herd of wild elephants comprising more than 50 elephants. The elephants also damaged food stock, furniture and other electronic goods inside the houses.
The house of Pradip Das of Jackson Grant village was also destroyed by the elephants. The family members somehow managed to escape and save their lives. Creating terror throughout the night, the herd of wild elephants finally left the village at dawn. Locals have alleged that forest officials of Bukhial Forest Beat did not turn up for patrolling during the hours of conflict despite repeated pleas. In recent times, this human-elephant conflict has taken a serious turn in various places like Sundarpur, Bukhial, Rongbong, Naharchola and Thuramukh.
