GOLAGHAT: A herd of wild elephants on Tuesday night entered Aitopnia Miri gaon in Golaghat district and created terror among the villagers. The wild elephants destroyed the house of Mridujyoti Bora as well as betel nut trees and banana trees in the village.

More than 50 wild elephants came to Aitonia Miri Gaon and destroyed agricultural crops of the villagers. This is not the first time that wild elephants have entered the village. Wild elephants come to this area several times in a year and destroy crops and houses.

A peasant development group alleged that the forest department had failed to protect the villagers from wild elephants. Similarly, in the greater Morangi area, including villages like Rong Bong Gaon, Bokial, Jeckson, Letekujan, Murphulani, Fallangoni, Purajanghal, Ponka Grant and Miri Pathar, 50-60 wild elephants often come to the villages at night in search of food and end up destroying houses and agricultural crops. Besides, several persons have lost their lives in attacks by wild jumbos.

Due to the terror of the wild elephants, villagers are spending sleepless nights in the greater Morangi area. The people alleged that the Forest Department had not taken any precautionary measures and not provided the villagers lights and crackers to chase away the elephants. No assistance has also been given to the victims.

In this context, nature lovers opined that continuous destruction of forests was leading to a conflict between man and wild animals. In most cases, the animals intrude into human habitation in search of food. Even in the urban areas, leopards and deer entering houses has become frequent. The main reason behind this is the continuous destruction of forests and non-availability of food and water in the forests.
