Women Initiates Protest Against Child Marriage Crackdown In Assam

The women in large numbers have raised their voice after the arrests of their respective husbands and sons.

GUWAHATI: As Assam has launched massive drive against child marriage and arrested a huge number of men from varied areas, now the women has raised question in this particular decision of the administration. 

Women from several parts of the state came forward to protest against the government's crackdown against child marriage. The women in large numbers have raised their voice after the arrests of their respective husbands and sons. 

The drive began on 3rd of February, Friday, and will continue for six more days across the entire state of Assam. Several cases came to light where a girl married before attaining the age of 18 years, is now pregnant and 20 years old. 

In such cases, women have raised question as, 'who will take care of us now?'. As per the reports, as many as 2000 people has been nabbed by the cops and 4004 cases has been recorded under child marriage. 

The police official has informed that, a list of approximately 8,000 accused are under the police departments, and the unit will try to arrest all of them in the coming days. Along with the groom or husband, priests and kazis who were involved in the process of child marriage, has also been put inside the custody. 

51 purohits and kazis are under the judicial custody, and the count continues. On 2nd of February, Thursday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma held a video conference with all district Superintendents, and various senior police officials. The video meeting revolved around discussion regarding actions against the ongoing child marriage practices in Assam. 

The Chief Minister also urged all the citizens to cooperate with the administration to eradicate the social evil. 

The CM tweeted regarding same on Friday morning. ''Chaired a VC of SPs in presence of GP Singh regarding state-wide police action to be launched from tomorrow against child marriage and reviewed the arrangements. I appeal to people to extend support and cooperate with us in our endeavour to rid the state of the evil practice.''
