LAKHIMPUR: One more worker on Monday died due to alleged unsecured working condition in the controversial Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) with 2000 MW installation capacity, being constructed by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh under the Dhemaji district in the Assam-Arunachal border area.

On Monday, a worker died on the spot due to electrocution while he was working at the Block No. 2 of the main dam of the project around 12:30 pm. The worker has been identified as Rajesh Saikia (38), son of Mitheswar Saikia, resident of village Moharicamp Chapori under Gogamukh Police Station of the Dhemaji district. After electrocution, his body was immediately taken to the Gogamukh Police Station, then sent to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for post mortem. As per report received Rajesh had been working at the SLHP under Soma Enterprise and a contractor for a couple of years as a contract worker. He is survived by his wife, two minor sons and two daughters

It is alleged that shot-circuit is a common phenomenon at the Block No. 2 of the main dam of the project. It is also alleged that the NHPC authority and other contractor organizations of the project have never paid any attention to secure the work places to check untimely death of the workers but made them work in an unsafe environment. Under such circumstances, one more worker, named Jitu Hatibaruah, resident of Parbatipur of Gerukamukh area under Gogamukh Police Station died at SLHP on June 6. On that day, a part of the 2nd Head Race Tunnel (intake structure) of the project collapsed suddenly. As a result of it, Jitu also died at the spot.

A otal of nine workers have allegedly died at SLHP site within the last 12 months. The workers have demanded the authority of the SLHP and other contractor organizations to secure their life in the work sites of the project.
