DIBRUGARH: A two day workshop on Research and Publication Ethics, held at M.D.K.G. College, concluded on Tuesday. The Principal of the college, Dr. Nibedita Phukan inaugurated the workshop by emphasizing on the necessity of research ethics in the fast changing academic scenario. She referred to the fact that while research publication has become an integral part of academia today, to enhance the situation a proper research mentality or mindset is required. The resource person for the first technical session was Dr. Sadiq Hussain, System Administrator (EDPS), Dibrugarh University. Dr. Hussain elaborated on the topic “How to write a Research Paper”. In a very succinct and precise manner, the resource person discussed the ways to write a research paper including the pitfalls associated with such an activity. He also pointed out the fact that a good research paper needs to answer a basic question as to why the writing of the paper is necessary and what new is it going to offer to the academic world or the society in general. Mere regurgitation of already available information or knowledge does not lead to good research.

The second and third technical sessions were taken up by Dr. Utpal Das, Librarian of Dibrugarh University. Dr. Das dealt at length the concept of research ethics and how without ethics research is meaningless. He also pointed out the connection between an ethical research mentality and our own integrity and sincerity as academicians. He emphasized that at the core of any research lies basic ethics and development of any nation through research cannot take place if ethics is removed from research. He also dwelt on how plagiarism occurs while writing a research paper, the various types of plagiarism, ways and means to detect plagiarism and how to avoid it.
