Workshop on science writing and mathematics learning organized in Doomdooma

As a part of observance of National Mathematics Day, a workshop on science writing and mathematics learning was organized at Doomdooma College by its IQAC and Science stream in collaboration with Assam Science Writers’ Association (ASWA).

DOOMDOOMA: As a part of observance of National Mathematics Day, a workshop on science writing and mathematics learning was organized at Doomdooma College by its IQAC and Science stream in collaboration with Assam Science Writers' Association (ASWA).

In the inaugural session, Dr Prakash Jyoti Barthakur, Principal of the college, lit the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. It was followed by felicitation of guests where DrAmiyaRajbongshi was specially honoured for receiving national award of popular science writer this year by Doomdooma College and Doomdooma Sakha Lekhika Samaroh Samity. Thereafter, Principal Dr Barthakur welcomed the guests while DhirenDeka, president of ASWA, spoke briefly about the various activities of the organization.

In his keynote speech, Dr Mukunda Rajbongshi lamented that after Sir CV Raman, no other Indian was able to get the Nobel Prize in Science although Hargobind Khorana and S Chandrasekhar obtained the same after working in foreign soil. Dr Amiya Rajbongshi, who was resource person of the first session on science writing, narrated about the hard work and patience required in writing. She cited the examples of Tolstoy and Ernest Hemingway for the amount of pain they had undertaken in revision of their novels before publishing. In the second session, Dr Mukunda Rajbongshi gave some instructions on how to study mathematics and allay fears about the subject while the other speaker, Dr Bubul Saikia spoke on building career in Mathematics.

After the practice session and interaction, the students were given certificates in the valedictory function. Earlier in the day, Dr Amiya Rajbongshi inaugurated a children's corner 'Gyansindhu' in the college library and Dr Mukunda Rajbongshi inaugurated the newly-formed office of Assam Science Society, Doomdooma College. Dr Bubul Saikia inaugurated a wall magazine especially published on the occasion. The workshop was well attended by a good number of college and school students of the district.
