LAKHIMPUR: World Braille Day, 2023 was celebrated in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday to honour the life and works of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system of reading and writing for blind and visually impaired people.
Notably, World Braille Day is a time to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and education for people who are blind or visually impaired. It is also a time to recognize the many advances in assistive technology that have made it easier for people with visual impairments to access information and communicate with others. These advances include the development of braille displays, screen readers, and other software that allows people to access computers and the internet using braille or speech.
In Dhakuakhana subdivision, the event was celebrated by Samagra Siksha Abhiyan under the auspices of Dhakuakhana Education Block at Dhakuakhana Government MV School with day-long programmes. The agenda of the event began with several competition events, organized among the specially-abled children. It was followed by a health screening camp for them in association with the subdivisional health office. Then a public awareness meeting was organized. It commenced with Digendra Nath Hazarika, the retired vice-principal of Paschim Dhakuakhana HS School, in the chair. The meeting was inaugurated by Dhakuakhana BEEO Bidyut Kumar Gogoi.
Attending the event as appointed speaker, Mina Kanta Saikia, the subject teacher of Dhenukhana HS School, explained the significance of the World Braille Day while delivering his lecture on 21 types of disability. Writer-poet Indira Gogoi was present in the event as chief guest. She appealed to all not to neglect the specially-abled children and shape them as human resource. Dhakuakhana Press Guild secretary Rajib Baruah, journalist Pratap Dutta, teachers Padmawoti Koch, Mukul Gogoi were among those who attended the event as invited guests.
