World Breastfeeding Week observed in Assam

TINSUKIA: Synchronizing with the observance of World Breastfeeding Week, the Tinsukia NHM, in association with Advantist Development & Relief Agency (Adra India), launched the district-level day-long programme at Hapjan Tea Estate under Hapjan block of NHM on Wednesday in presence of UNICEF and ABITA, staff of ADRA and others.

The programme launched by Dr Chandralekha Saikia, the SDMHO of Hapjan, was attended by 14 lactating mothers and three pregnant women. Inaugurating the programme, Dr Saikia laid down the importance of breastfeeding and said that breast milk provides all the necessary nutrients in proper proportions and protects babies against infection, allergies, besides facilitating proper digestion.

The meeting was also addressed by Gaurisankar Dutta, coordinator of Adra, Hapjan Tea Estate's social welfare officer Gayatri Saikia, Nitu Gharphalia, ABITA coordinator, among others. The event also witnessed a street drama.

NALBARI: In connection with observation of World Breastfeeding Week from August 1 to August 7, SMK Hospital has organized different programmes to make the people aware about how to promote breastfeeding exclusively up to six months and compulsory feeding up to 2 years of age. The activities include pledge to support breastfeeding in every hospital by ensuring early initiation of breastfeeding. "Pregnant and lactating mothers are being visited by ASHA, Supervisors, Anganwadi workers and ANM," said Mallika Devi, District Community Mobilizer.
