World Environment Day: Talk on environment held in Dibrugarh University

DIBRUGARH: The NSS unit in collaboration with the IQAC and the department of Political Science had jointly organized a special talk on 'Water and Environment (Clean Water Challenges)' on the occasion of World Environment Day. Dr. Biraj Dutta, NSS Programme Officer welcomed the gathering and highlighted the objective of the programme. Dr Surajit Konwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Dibrugarh University delivered the invited talk on 'Water and Environment (Clean Water Challenges)'.

Dr. Konwar highlighted the major problems relating to the environment and water-related problems. While talking about water, he had emphasized on the problem of arsenic and fluoride, which are very much alarming in India. He further added that the North-East region is relatively safe compared to the mainland of India. But even after that, out of 33 districts of Assam in 24 districts, the groundwater is polluted with arsenic and fluoride, which is very much alarming for the State of Assam.

He stated that soon we may face an acute crisis over water and carcinogenic diseases in the region. Dr. S. K. Saikia, Principal, DHSK College, presided over the meeting and expressed his concern about water. He stated that the people should learn the various techniques to purify the water so that it can prevent the harmful particles from infiltrating the human body. He opined that if the world had to witness the third world war, then definitely it will be a war for water.
