TEZPUR: On the occasion of World Hearing Day, an awareness meeting-cum-screening was held on Wednesday in the Tezpur Academy School premises with an aim to raise the awareness of the general public about hearing loss and offer various possibilities for prevention through appropriate ear care. The programme was organized by the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, Sonitpur, Tezpur.
The programme began with a rally which was flagged off by Dr Nilakhshi Das. The rally was attended by Dr S P Bordoloi, Dr Jerina Nazrine, students of Nursing School of Kanaklata Civil Hospital and other healthcare workers. The rally passed throughout the town from Kanaklata Civil Hospital and was led by Dr Tilak Bhattacharjee and Dr Bijoy P Das. It was followed by an awareness meeting-cum-screening. Presided over by Principal of Tezpur Academy School, Jitendra Nath, the programme was graced by Dr J Ahmed, Joint Director of Health Services, Sonitpur and other dignitaries.
Attending the programme, Dr Tilak Bhattacharjee said that most hearing loss and ear diseases could be avoided by identifying hearing loss through screening of newborns, school children and adults above 50 years at an early stage and then carrying out their treatment in the beginning stage. Dr Bhattacharjee also spoke about the significance and importance of ear care, hearing loss and encouraged people to check their hearing regularly and practice safe listening, especially those who work in noisy places or listen to music at high volumes for lengthy periods. Earlier, around 50 students were screened.
