World No-Tobacco Day observed in Darrang

MANGALDAI: District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC ), Darrang in collaboration with different stakeholders on Tuesday observed the World No-Tobacco Day in the district involving various sections of the society including administrators, judiciary, police, student, teacher, medical practitioner, women and NGO members.

In this connection, an awareness meeting was held here at the conference hall of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). Presenting the key note address, supported by audiovisual media Dr Nirmal Kumar Beria, Nodal Officer of the DTCC highlighted how the consumption of smokeless tobacco among the youths have been alarmingly increasing in Assam over the last few years and the role of the stakeholders and the society in curbing the menace. He also discussed how the cessation centre in Mangaldai Civil Hospital can help a habituated tobacco user willing to stop tobacco consumption and need of the effective application of COTPA , 2003.

Several other speakers including Sushmita Borpujari, Member Secretary , DLSA , Darrang, Rini Hazarika, Executive Officer, Mangaldai Municipal Board also spoke on the occasion.

Community oath taking against tobacco consumption in different educational institutions of the district also marked the occasion. The day was also observed here in Darrang Cancer Centre under the aegis of Assam Cancer Care Foundation. Speaking on the occasion Dr Seeba Santhmayer and Dr Saidul Islam appealed to all to avoid tobacco and eat nutritious food to overcome the risk of developing cancer.
