JAMUGURIHAT: Jamugurihat branch of Senior Citizens Forum had convened a meeting as a part of the celebration of World Senior Citizens Day here on Saturday. The day-long programme began with the hoisting of the flag by Lila Bhuyan, president of Jamugurihat branch of the Senior Citizens Forum. The open session held with Lila Bhuyan in the chair began with a folk song performed by Nilkamal Hazarika.
Three senior most persons of the greater Jamugurihat area including Prabin Bora, Niru Sarma and Ghanashyam Bhuyan were felicitated by the organizers with a citation, gamosa, cheleng and a packet of books. Dr. Haren Saikia, veteran medical and health officer addressed the gathering as an appointed speaker who had highlighted the issues like health care and advised all to be conscious about individual health hygiene. Retired teacher Dharanidhar Das, social worker Dinesh Mahanta traced the origin and history of World Senior Citizens day celebration as guest lecturers.
Dharanidhar Das further added that despite the proclamation of UNO 1991 and execution of Senior Citizens Act 1999, the senior citizens of India were deprived of getting the benefits of five chartered demands. All the proceedings of the meeting were carried out by Nagen Bora and Pranab Saikia, secretary and assistant secretary of Jamugurihat branch of the Senior Citizens Forum. Notably, World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated on August 21 around the world. But due to some technical issues, the Jamugurihat branch of the Senior Citizens Forum was unable to organize it, said Nagen Bora.
