Tezpur: A day-long programme on World Soil Day was organized on Thursday at KVK, Sonitpur campus. Dr Pramod Chandra Deka, Head, KVK, Sonitpur, welcomed the farmers and dignitaries and offered the inaugural speech. Dr. Namita Dutta, SMS (Soil Science), elaborated about the theme of World Soil Day and explained about the hazards of soil erosion, measures to take up for reducing soil erosion, significance of balanced fertilizer application, importance of Soil Health Card (SHC) and encouraged the farmers for soil test. An extension bulletin entitled Soil Health Card: Farmer’s awareness about Soil Test was released and distributed among the farmers. Prakash Chandra Bora, District Agriculture Officer, Sonitpur emphasized soil health restoration and use of recommended dose of fertilizers in crop field.
Dr. Binay Kumar Barman, District Veterinary Officer, Sonitpur, also discussed about different government schemes related to livestock development, how cattle grazing enhances soil erosion and possible measures to reduce its effect. Around 100 Soil Health Cards were distributed among the farmers of Sonitpur district. A short interactive session was also held between the farmers and scientists of KVK, Sonitpur. Around 100 farmers from different parts of the district and all officials of KVK attended the programme.
