Youth beaten to death in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: In a horrific incident, a youth was beaten to death by a gang of goat thieves in Lakhimpur district on Friday night.

The incident took place at Gobarisali Changmai Gaon under Bogolijan area of the district. The deceased has been identified as Pranab Saikia (22), son of Bakul Saikia, a permanent resident of the village. Pranab was a student of Tezpur ITI.

As per report, a bhaona was staged in the Namghar of the village on Friday night. While the people of the village were busy in enjoying the bhaona, the gang of the thief entered the house of Dulal Saikia and managed to steal a goat taking advantage of the bhaona. Then Pranab Saikia chased the group of thieves to nab them. After noticing him chasing them, the thieves started beating him to death and dumped his body on roadside around 500 metres away from his house. It is known that Dulal Saikia is the uncle of deceased Pranab Saikia.

Later, his body was recovered and taken to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital. However, he was declared brought dead. One bike, bearing registration number AS 07 S 7293, was also recovered from the spot. It has been registered in the name of one Amina Khatun, inhabitant of Ward No. 12 of North Lakhimpur town as per information received from North Lakhimpur Police.

Being infuriated with the shocking incident, the people of the village and neighbouring area blocked the North Lakhimpur bypass for hours on Saturday, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and capital punishment for them.

Later, North Lakhimpur Police, taking the bike as the clue of the incident, detained Amina Khatun’s husband Asif Ali. It is known that Asif Ali mortgaged the bike to one Safik Ali twenty days back. From Safik Ali the bike was taken by another man named Aizul Ali. Police arrested Safik Ali (33), son of Late Abdul Khalek, inhabitant of Gobarishali, and Aizul Ali (24), son of Usuf Ali, inhabitant of Rangajan, as main accused of the shocking incident.

A case, vide No. 25/23 US 302/34 IPC, has been registered against them at North Lakhimpur Police Station. Rangajan is a neighbouring village of Gobarishali Changmai Gaon. Infuriated people gheraoed the house of the accused too. However, no more untoward incident was reported.
